Claims Guide

Overview

Below you will find a list of common penalty codes that are occurred. This is by no means an exhaustive list, as BNSF Railway itself has almost 400 common penalty codes. It is also important to remember, even these 400 codes do not cover every penalty that can be incurred.

In order to achieve the best results, make sure you document all claims thoroughly. For most claims, you will need some or all of the following to create a claim that can be researched and payable:

  • Date
  • Time Penalty Occurred. (for some penalties such as an RO, you will be required to provide the start and stop times.)
  • Car Number(s)
  • Track Number(s)
  • Engine Number(s)
  • Mile Post or Station Location(s)
  • Company Official who instructed you to make the move that created the penalty
  • (Who, What, When, Where, Why)

For all Companion Claims (2B, D2, RO, 73, and Y2) make sure you document the date, time and train this penalty occurred on so the Local Chairman can put in an appropriate claim. Either email or leave a copy of the claim in the local chairmans mailbox in the yard office.
